English in Media- TV, News and Internet

Children of the 21st century need to learn about the language used ‘in’ the 21st century. There are various informative platforms out there that present information in various language styles. Television, internet, radio, newspapers and magazines are all wonderful sources of information but they also come with ‘miscellaneous’ content that has no relevance for students. It is important to teach students how to extract only quality information from these sources while overlooking the unnecessary content.


Students are encouraged to share their favourite programs from any of the media platforms such as television, radio, magazines, internet and newspapers and explain why they prefer this medium over others. It is imperative that the content they are advocating be informative, suitable for their age group and easily understandable. The informality of this module greatly appeals to the young audience which makes them receptive and participative in this activity. 

Learning English becomes an entertaining exercise for children by showcasing informative content from different mediums in media like newspapers, television internet and magazine. For each of these mediums, a different style of language is used.


Students will be taught (briefly) how to write scripts for a television news channel on a given topics, how to write a magazine article, creating a program schedule for an internet show, writing interesting newspaper articles and many more. Having a mock news telecast, or presentation about a natural phenomenon as is shown on channels like Discovery and National Geographic can enable children to write on a wide variety of topics, in a wide variety of styles, while keeping the content interesting and relevant.
